I have studied physics at the Humboldt University at Berlin and graduated at the Moscow State Lomonosov University (PhD, quantum chemistry), Humboldt University at Berlin (Dr. sc. nat., theoretical physics) and Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg. The University of Resources (Facultas docendi; the last two qualifications have been recognized as being equivalent to Dr. rer. nat. habil.). 1984--1997 I worked in a technological department of the Central Institute for Optics and Spectroscopy, then Max Born Institute for Nonlinear Optics and Short Pulse Spectroscopy in Berlin-Adlershof on the electronic, thermal, and optical properties of semiconductor lasers for fibre-optic communication and material processing, respectively. In 1991, I was a senior visiting fellow at the School of Information Systems of the University of East Anglia in Norwich, UK. In 1995/96 I used my Leopoldina award for working at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. In 1997 I changed to the telecommunication department of Siemens AG, then Nokia Siemens Networks, then Redknee. Since 2004 I'm delivering talks and lectures at several Kazakh universities. I'm an honorary professor at the Abai University in Almaty, Kazakhstan, was an adjunct professor at the University of Applied Sciences Wildau, Germany, and a vice-rector at the Taraz State Pedagogical University, Kazakhstan. 2010--2021 I ran the company Kazakhstan Business Society UG. Since 2015 I'm representing the leading journal TransLogistics Kazakhstan in the EU and writing regularly for it.
